A long-range strike by defender Gianluca Mancini earned AS Roma a 1-0 home win over Juventus in Serie A on Sunday, ending the visitors’ unbeaten run of seven games in all competitions.
Roma, who became the first Serie A side to be beaten by lowly Cremonese on Tuesday, have now won five home games in a row without conceding a goal.
They moved back into fourth in the standings on 47 points, one point behind thirdplaced Lazio and level with AC Milan in fifth, in their bid to secure a first top-four finish in five years.
In a clash which sprang to life after the break, Mancini sealed the win for Roma in the 53rd minute, sending a powerful low shot into the bottom left corner and leaving Szczesny no chance.
Juventus, who had multiple chances to level the score, were left with 10 men just before full time when substitute Moise Kean kicked out at Mancini, after the Roma player had grabbed his shirt in a tussle, and got a straight red card one minute after coming on.
Earlier, Inter Milan grabbed a 2-0 home win against Lecce, tightening their grip on a Champions League spot.
Inter, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at Bologna last weekend which virtually ended their hopes of winning the title, moved back to second in the standings on 50 points from 25 games.
They remain 15 points behind leaders Napoli.
Marseille boost
Olympique de Marseille boosted their hopes of Champions League football next season after Sead Kolasinac’s second-half goal gave them a 1-0 victory at Stade Rennais in Ligue 1.
The result put second-placed Marseille, who have fared better away from h o m e t h i s season, on 55 points from 26 games, eight behind Paris Saint-Germain but four ahead of AS Monaco in third.
Monaco, who led 2-1 at Troyes after a late Wissam Ben Yedder double, were held 2-2 following Ike Ugbo’s stoppage-time equaliser and lead fourth-placed RC Lens on goals scored.
Frankfurt held
Eintracht Frankfurt’s hopes of finishing in the Bundesliga’s top four suffered another setback when they were held to a 2-2 draw at VfL Wolfsburg.
The result left Frankfurt sixth on 39 points from 23 games, three adrift of fourthplaced RB Leipzig and fifth-placed Freiburg. Wolfsburg remained eighth in the table on 34 points.
Earlier on Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen beat Hertha Berlin 4-1 to move up to ninth in the standings.
